Adding young driver temporarily

My wifes insurance on her Clio 1.2 is up for renewal and I have been looking round for her. At present she has been able to put our 18 year old son on her CIS policy for short periods, as he is away at university. I have got various quotes at good prices and the companies say that he can be added for when he is on holiday etc. The frequency and length of cover vary between companies but when I ask what the additional premium will be they all say they cant tell me as costs are always changing, which I can understand. I ask to cost it as at todays figure but still none of them will commit and all they say is, you will have to take out the policy first which I find to be a bit of a gamble.
Has anybody had any experience with doing this?

Have you asked for a quote to put him on fulltime? that might be cheaper, less admin than keep changing it. Some companies charge an admin fee everytime they change the policy. Keep on at them to give you a definate answer or tell them you won't be placing the business with them.

  • Yes Nearlyrich we have had him on the policy fulltime at 5X the cost, hence the need to add him for short periods. CIS class it as any driver rather than an an additional temp one.
I have also mentioned to other companies that I wouldnt be taking their cover if they couldnt give me a figure but I get the take it or leave it attitude.

Assume your wife has a full ncd.Suggest you try Liverpool Victoria.Provided your wife is still the main driver they won't want 5x the price to include your son but should be less than 2x.I have no connction with them except as a satisfied customer.

    best of luck

Thanks for that maclean2, very useful. Got a quote online from Liv Vic and with her 1 year NCD and our son on the policy, they quoted £482, Half that of her present insurer. I had to ring them up to confirm as it was too good to be true and a lady told me they arent worried about speeding convictions or how long anybody has held a license, they base it on age.
The wife is probably going to go for it, what are they like?

    Thanks again, happy motoring

Hi -they have a good reputation in the industry for service and claims handling.I switched to them because of the dreaded 6 points for going 12mph and 7mph over the limit. No extra charge for that as you mentioned.

If your wife is or has ever been a civil servant she will be able to get a sizeable discount provided she joins csma at £17.00 per year.Discounts also for AMICUS and UNISON members and a few other groups.Ring and ask for details on 0800.514.514.

    Best of luck
