61% cheaper car insurance

:rotfl: This morning my 17 year old son passed his driving test. Tesco motor insurance quoted me just under £1000 in total to include him to my policy. Took a tip from Martin and shopped around on insuresuppermarket.com. I couldn't believe the quote - it was 61% cheaper with leagal protection and I was able to keep my no clams protection. Granted the excess was higher but at £378 for the year I can take a holiday with the money I have saved. :j

A good tip money and safety-wise, is to get newly-qualified learners to take Pass-plus, which gives one-year's no claim bonus automatically.

Where did you get this information from, I have never heard of a Pass Plus being entitled to a years no claims before??

Only that certain insurance companies offer discounts for those who have done their pass plus.

Churchills gave me one years NCB in return for doing the Pass Plus, although they said I will get less of a discount next year.

And £1k for your son's insurance is good for a 17 year old, you won't get it any less, and £378 excess is very low, I think mine is closer to £600

As long as you arent committing fraud by having yourself as the policyholder and main driver when it is your son that is going to be the main driver... will get you loaded to CIFAS, your credit rating blacklisted and your insurance voided

I have never heard of a company giving people a years NCD with Pass Plus

I thought the discount you got for going with a company who offers PP discounts equated to a years NCD saving, But you couldn't claim to actually have a years NCD

My son passed his test just before we went on holiday. Today's job was to sort out his car insurance. I insured my MPV and his Corsa with Liverpool & Victoria, with both policies in my name. My protected NCD was used on the Corsa policy and they gave me an introductory 1 year NCD on the shuttle. Both policies were extremely reasonable. Today, however when I contacted them to make my son the insured on the Corsa, they wanted £3,300. Then they wanted £650 for my 9 year old MPV.

I tried both confused.com and the insurance supermarket, both of which came in with exorbitant quotes for my son.

I then tried Direct Line. They quoted me £457.80 for the MPV and then £1,579 for the Corsa. This figure includes an additional 10% discount for insuring a second car in the same household.

I enquired about Pass Plus and was told that because the policy was taken out on line, only a further 10% discount would be offered (rather than the 20% if done over the phone - you already get 10% discount on line anyway). This would only apply to the first year's premiums. I don't need to spend £150 for Pass Plus, to save £157.90.

Just make sure that your no claims is protected, when your son is driving!
