Beware Swiftcover automatic renewal

Options
Anyone with their car insurance with swiftcover.com should beware of the small print in which they automatically renew your policy after 12 months. I was sent an email warning me of this but it went straight into my junk mail box so they went ahead and took the payment from my credit card even though my expiry had changed.
I was fortunate to notice an e mail fromthem thanking me for my payment when I went into my junk mail box to empty it.

There's been no problem getting a refund apart from them asking me to phone a premium rate telephone number so I give them my cc expiry date so they can refund my card!

Be very careful dealing with swiftcover.com:(

Well I'm with them and have stayed with them because they are the cheapest for me. When I logged in about 2 weeks before my policy was due for renewal it was written all over the place about auto renewal so not sure how you missed it.

Don't a lot of them do auto renewal anyway?

Quite a few "off line" insurers do automatic renewal unless you tell them otherwise. They do give 2/3 weeks notice.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • A lot of insurance company's do this, and surely you should know when your insurance is due?

Elephant did this to me a few years ago despite me telling them I didnt want to renew.

The worst thing was they took the payment off my mums credit card (she had kindly paid the previous years on her card for me and I gave her the cash) and she got hit with fees for it taking her over her limit.
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)

Im with Swiftcover as they were by far the cheapest for me. They do tell you when you 1st start that it is automatic renewal, then send an email to say that they willl be renewing your cover. Next time when using online insurance make sure there details are entered in the "safe" list so you get all their emails
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
  • Not sure why we need to beware of Swiftcover?? Most car insurance policies auto-renewal and explain this in the policy documentation.
Perhaps you should check your junkmail box more carefully!

Or alternatively try reading all the terms and conditions when they take the policy out.:)

    No problem here with Swiftcover.

We had a car insured with them and I let the policy automatically renew (the renewal price was near enough the cheapest). Then a couple of days later a friend has his car written off, so we sold the car to him.

I phoned swiftcover on a freephone number (thanks to say to 0870) and they cancelled the policy there and then, and stopped the direct debit.

    No fuss whatsoever.

Kwikfit do automatic renewal - it's in small print on the back of the renewal letter. I was a bit annoyed though, because I rang up to cancel and the initial phone was answered quickly, but when he put me through to cancel it wasn't answered after 10 mins so I gave up. I wrote a letter cancelling as it was £200 more than most of the quotes on web comparison sites, and £100 more than last year. They are good to deal with if you have a claim though.
