So glad I am leaving the Halifax

Sorry, but I just have to vent here. Sorry for the long post!

The Halifax changed their overdraft charges, so the style of account no longer suits my needs. Fine, I'll transfer to the Nationwide.

Everything went swimmingly until today when I checked my standing orders. My Halifax account had gone overdrawn because two SO's had gone out at the beginning of this month. I was under the impression they would be changed automatically. Again, fine I thought. I'll go online and cancel them now. However, going online it showed they were already deleted.

So, I called the customer 'care' line to find out what was going on. The first girl I spoke to said the SO had been amended online on the 18th Feb and the last payment was due on the 1/4/2010. I hadn't done the online transaction and can only assume it is part of the transfer to Nationwide. So I asked her to cancel it as I didn't want it taking out in April. She then said she had noticed it was already cancelled, she couldn't tell mewhy it shows as cancelled and amended, so she put you through to online banking.

So I went through the whole explaination again to be told once I again I had made the amendment (which I hadn't). She said she could show my how to cancel it online, but when I explained it was already cancelled she said the previous girl must have just done it, which she hadn't at all.

I'm annoyed because I've already been charge £4 (£1 day...the reason I am changing) for an overdraft that shouldn't have happened because the SO was cancelled on the 18th Feb (by someone but who knows who...).

Rubbish and so frustrating. They are going investigate and let me know...

Halifax are actually only bad when the customer using them cannot manage their own finances.

I am glad that all the people that are sheite with money are clearing off. It may make banking cheaper for me.

It sounds like the problem might have been with the way the Nationwide set up the transfer - I can't imagine Halifax cancelling a SO for no reason whereas it sounds like Nationwide switched them over too early, so it's probably better to take it up with them.

I agree with this comment to some extent, however Halifax are genuinely !!!!!.

I keep promising to move away from them and I don't have, and never have had any debt (other than my mortgage)

Without any authorisation they once changed my address details on my current account to one 70miles away, and sent my statements to a stranger.

Then there was the time when they lost £15K+ of my ISA funds and couldn't tell me where it was for a month.

As a former shareholder, Halifax are !!!!!.

Must say that I find it difficult to decide out of Halifax and NatWest who are the most incompetent.

Halifax - we open a regular savings account and start paying in £100/month by direct debit. Halifax fail to collect the direct debit one month (their mistake - plenty of funds and my bank confirmed Halifax did not attempt to take the payment). I spotted that they had not taken the direct debit and contacted them, and they assured me that they will sort it out.

They sorted it out by closing my account, then denying any knowledge of the account ever existing, despite having printouts of statements. I get passed from one clueless drone to another, until I threatened to get the FSA involved.

Have had 3 Halifax accounts for years.

Never overdrawn and no problems - kiss of death or just lucky? (Maybe both!!)

Actually, Mrs MbW and I have a joint account at the Halifax now - it used to be solely in her name, then when she went to care for her grandmother, it was relatively easy to get my name added to her account as a joint account holder.

The branch gave me a form, which they said I could fill out her and my details on, then I needed to send it to her to be signed and returned to me so I could take it to the branch with proof of ID and address (I also took in a copy of our marriage certificate).

I did all this and they set it up. Nationwide on the other hand have rules that would have required her to come all the way back here in person and a bit more proof of ID and residence before they'd have given us a joint account.

I was with halifax for the first 21 years of my life, then I needed to borrow £3k to relocate for my first proper job. They refused to help at all so I got angry and moved to another bank who were more helpful. So they wasted 21 years of running my unprofitable accounts and now are missing out on the substantial savings I now have that could have finally made them some money out of me. Eejits.

I been with Halifax since 1983.

Took a mortgage out with them in 1989, didnt miss any payments for 17 years. Went to a mortgage broker as we wanted to move, got accepted for a mortgage just before credit crunch in 2006. The Halifax went back on there word so ended up going else where, haven't so far in just over 3 years missed a payment, I closed my account with Halifax after they messed me around

I have just switched to Alliance and Leicester from Halifax as I was outraged by their charge of £1 a day for an agreed overdraft. I was quite happy with them until then however the £100 I received from A & L when I used their switching service was a nice bonus!
