I hope someone can help with this query.........son is 19 just finished college course and hoping to go to uni soon.Due to problems with college staffing , he had a huge amount of work to re do with a tight deadline and so reluctantly gave up his p/t job at a supermarket in order to get the work done. He had to decline his uni offers as was not sure if course would get finished (and not able to get enough points for those courses anyway- misadvised by college).
He is hoping to get a clearing place .......but wants to work in the mean time. Can he claim JSA to help with transport to interviews etc? He lives at home with 2 working parents. Will our income / savings be taken into account? we did not qualify for EMA and are on no benefits .0 -
Hi, I'm looking for some advice.
My husband has just finished University and has been looking for jobs for months in the lead up to his graduation, unfortunately, he hasn't been lucky (he was looking in a specific field). He has now graduated and is still looking for work, but went and signed on this month. Today we got a letter back stating that he has been declined due to lack of class 1 national insurance contributions - he only worked during the summer as we live about 50 mins away from the Uni and getting part time work wasn't viable with the amount of travelling he needed to do over the five days of the wk.
Is there anything we can do about this? Surely he should be entitled to something to live on and get to and from Interviews with - especially as I don't earn a lot and my contract ends at the end of August and it's not being renewed. I know that I'LL be able to claim at the beginning of September, but we really need him to be able to claim now.
Thanks for any replies you can offer me.

Unfortunately, he is probably not entitled to JSA(IB) because of your earnings. Check out https://www.entitledto.co.uk for other benefits."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

I have been off work since Feb following a car accident and have been receiving sick pay from my employers. My main injury was a badly broken arm which required an operation to have a metal plate and pins inserted. The hospital discharged me from the fracture clinic this week as they say my arm has now healed but I am unable to do my job as it involves heavy lifting. My employer is now wanting to know what i am going to do. I know i can't cope at all with the job. I have attempted to return to work twice and had to go off again. There isn't any alternative employment they can give me. They have offered to terminate my employment on the grounds of mutual agreement but i need to know if I will be eligible for jobseekers allowance if I take up their offer. We don't have any other income as my wife doesn't work and we can't be without any income as we have a mortgage to pay. I don't believe I could qualify for sickness benefit for very long as my fracture has healed and although I am still having physio at the hospital on my shoulder, I couldn't say I am incapable of work, just not the job I already have. Am I likely to have to wait 26 weeks before getting any jobseekers allowance?0

When you claim you will be asked your reason for leaving - if you state that you are no longer capable of doing your job, and your employer confirms this, there should be no sanction applied to your claim.Gone ... or have I?0

You have been off since february, I would be wondering why you couldn't continue to be 'off' whilst you look for a more suitable job0

Not sure how to post a question so as this is the only option I could find, I have used this - sorry if it's wrong! I have just been made redundant and was told that even though I have paid NI contributions in full for over 30 years and am looking for work, I am not eligible to receive a job seekers allowance because I am in receipt of a company pension. Is this right?0

Unfortunately yes, this is correct.
'If you have a pension payment from an occupational or personal pension scheme any amount over £50 a week will be deducted from your contribution-based JSA entitlement and the whole amount would be offset against income-based JSA.' This is from http://www.hounslow.gov.uk/jobseekers_allowance.
So as the current rate of JSA is £67.50, if your pension is over £117.50 per week then you would not be entitled to any form of JSA, whether income based or contributions based.
You can still sign for NI credits and help with looking for work in the future but as you already have the required 30 years contributions you may feel that this is not necessary.Sometimes it seems that just when I think I have reached rock bottom, someone hands me a shovel.0 -
