mothercare refusing exchange

I got as a present for my newborn some mothercare bedding (4 items of a certain design), as my nearest mothercare is a good 20 miles away, I rang up their customer care line ( 08453 30 40 70 ) and asked them if I could take the items back for an exchange for something else as I don't have the reciept, they said no problem as long as its a mothercare item, I explained It has mothercare written on the labels, they confirmed it is an exclusive mothercare only product so there would no problems.
So off i toddle to my local mothercare and the sales assistant says they dont sell them at that store, asks where it came from, I said I dont know, possibly online order, it was a present, but possibly the branch nearest that person. She then rang up that branch and asked them if they sell it, they said no. She said she was ringing the store so she can send it back to them and they can resell it, but as she doesnt know what store it is, she cant take it.
She then told me that I couldn't exchange it without proof of purchase as it cost more than £50.
I asked if I could exchange the 2 smaller items that come to £50, she then said no because it has to be done all together, I explained that I could just take the other bits back to my car and bring those back and she then said no because I now know your face.
I am about to send an email to their customer services stating the problems I had, but wondered if this is a normal thing with mothercare and if anyone else has had the same problem?

What was the reason for returning the items? unless faulty mothercare don't have to accept a return:hello: Hiya, I'm single mom, avid moneysaver and freecycler, sometimes  but definatly0
