council tax on two properties???

Hi everyone,
I hope someone can answer this question...My boyfriend and I own a house. He is a fulltime student, so we got a 25%discount cause I was the single earner.
I got a short term job in another place so I am now going to move into a room in a shared property for the next 2 months as the commute is just too long but my boyfriend will stay in the house (however effectively he is not paying council tax as he is a student).
Now I am wondering...I thought I only needed to pay council tax on the room that I am living in, but considering I own half of the house, do I have to effectively pay council tax twice???
I know this is a bit complicated but hope someone can shine some light on it.
Thanks!

your home with the BF in it remains your main house to which you are expecting to retrun therefore there is no basis for saying you are exempt from CT on that house, so you will still have to pay for it
how much CT will you actually be paying on the shared place, do you each pay a set % of the bill or is the cost of the CT included in your rent? Either way then yes you will also have to pay CT there, I had a friend who did just what you describe and had to pay twice.0 -
It depends where your main home is - if you are leaving most of your property in the house you share with your boyfriend, you are going back to visit, having your post delivered there, behaving as a couple (e.g. shop and eat together) then the authorities will deem you to be still living there.
If you move all your stuff out and only take an overnight bag when you visit, change all your official addresses (bank statements, voters roll, drivers license), then clearly you are no longer a resident even tho you own the property. Lot of hassle to avoid a bit of council tax tho. Please don't be tempted to lie councils can and do check, it is an offence to claim single person discount when you are not entitled.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
