Hi all,
I have always had fantastic advice when ever i have needed it on this forum:T..so i'd like to pick your brains for idea's please!
I am moving to a brand new house, newly turfed garden---absolute nightmare with my 2 golden retrievers..they WILL dig it into a muddy mess within minutes!:(
So i am going to fence of the grassed area for now, they will just have the patio area.
The problem is that there is a strip about 1/2 meter wide along the side of the patio area, so not practical to fence off. I was thinking of putting gravel down the edge but in my previous house they used the gravel area as somewhere to wee and i could never get rid of the smell of wee:mad: Any ideas of an alternative to gravel would be much appreciated!
Thank you:D:D

No idea of how to stop the smell getting there in the first place, but biological washing powder does the trick to get rid of it, make it up into a solution and wash it down with it.2 angels in heaven :A0

We have 2 German Shepherds and a slate border around the patio area. I find sloshing it down with Jayes Fluid every day stops the smell, we also use it for washing down the patio are with a soft brush. It is pet freindly as used for kennels and stables.
Hope this helps.

We have also used Jeyes before but I personally find the smell totally overwhelming, plus is it quite expensive to do this with everyday.2 angels in heaven :A0

I am thinking of buying sand (children's play sand, not builder's) and putting this down in an area for my dog to use. In a holiday house they had this at one end of the patio and my dog always chose to do his business there (and NO it was NOT a childrens sandpit!!!)
Sand drains quickly so in theory the wee should drain though it, and so will the rain which may help keep the smell down. It also makes scooping up poop easier.
Or perhaps grow some herbs in a pot there to cover up the smell.0 -
Hmm, If i had sand it would just get dug up.2 angels in heaven :A0

So get some sand for digging and let them on the grass for weeing.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -
Can't let mine on the grass in this weather, its far too wet and they'd do a great job of churning it into mud in a very short time.
Op seems to have the same troubles too2 angels in heaven :A0 -
Thanks all! I do love the smell of Jayes fluid!
My dogs would most certainly dig up the sand...menaces that they are!
I may just go with the gravel and try the bio washing powder idea!
I just wish they would grow out of the digging phase asap!:)
Would make my life so much easier:D0 -
Good thread, I have the same problems with a full time digging dog! She has trashed the garden completely and I am considering getting rid of the turf completely.0

I am lucky in that my dog never digs in the garden - but does like to dig the sofa cusions and bury his toys!0
