A good MP3 player for £100?

The problem with so many mp3 players on the market is that you get confused on what is possibly good. So, I would like to gather the input of you, fellow Neowiners, to identify a good match for my requirements... so, here goes:

1. At least 2 GB FLASH memory
2. Rechargeable battery with at least 10 hours playback
3. Small
4. Something with direct folder manipulation (no ITunes, etc.)
5. Something with quick mp3 track selection (ie. when i click on the next track, the song should start immediately. Reason for this is because of the mix cd's i own in mp3 format).

Apart from that, I'm quite open. I did come across this Datasafe mp3 player which looked perfect, but, fails to meet number 4 on above as commented by a buyer on AdvancedMp3Players.co.uk:

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Well, apart from #5 in your list (there is a small, but minimal delay), I can recommend the Samsung YP series.

I have a YP-U1 (2Gb) which I got a couple of weeks ago for my birthday and can't fault the thing.

I notice that Amazon (and probably other places - you'll have to do your own price search - I knew Amazon stocked them so I went straight there) do the newer model now for £70:

It's certainly a consideration. I've moved from a Creative Zen (old brick model) to this and I love it.

Or the Samsung YP Z5. The 2gb version is £100. An excellent player, was looking at getting one myself until the refurbished iPods came up on the Grab-it forum. Came top in my recent What Hifi Audio & Visual Magazine.

It's comparable to the Nano, but has a 35hour battery life, and you can drag and drop files, no need for extra software.

Or the Sandisk Sansa E250. Another excellent player. The only reason I didn't consider it was that it doesn't support Ogg Vorbis, which a lot of my music is encoded in.

Still, it's got over 20 hours of battery life. It can play videos too, great for putting Simpsons, Family Guy etc... on and watching on the way to work. Not really made for movies though.

Also the battery is replaceable, which is quite rare with such players, so when it starts to lose charge, just get another one and fit it yourself (Apple should take note!).

And finally, Sandisk have opened up the firmware to the community, releasing the source. So no doubt, you'll get people writing improved and more feature rich firmware.

Both meet all your criteria, although the Sandisk is £10 over your budget.

The Samsung players look awesome... more so the YP Z5. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks again!
