would welcome any advice from you clever people.. last time the gas company rep came to read my father's meter - which is on an outside wall by the house encased in a "cupboard" type fitting - he broke the lock to the door - in front of me - by forcing it shut . he said "oh, sorry i'll make a note of that next time so when someone comes round next time they'll have a spare part to fix it". and then he left. Today my father gets a note saying the gas company couldn't read the meter becasue the door is broken and my father has to pay to fix the broken door as it's on his property! but THEIR rep broke it??

Contact his supplier and explain that their meter reader broke the door, agreed he ahd and agreed he would get if fixed.

You need to deal with this quickly. If it is more than 6 weeks after the door was broken, then the meter operator deem it as no longer their fault :( It is nothing to do with the supplier, as they aren't responsible for the meter in any way, however spiro is correct. Phone your father's supplier, explain the issue and they will liaise with the meter operator.

If it doesn't turn out that they won't fix it, then you can buy meter box doors online relatively cheaply - I've had to do this myself :( If it's the whole box that needs replacing, that can be relatively expensive as the meter operator will have to turn the supply off whilst they do it, so I'd get onto your supplier ASAP. :) Hope that helps :)
