Remote Controller

I am considering buying a flat screen TV to hang on our chimney breast wall. I'm now thinking what to do with the boxes (sky, dvd rec/player) etc... I have an understairs cupboard that is behind the chimney breast where I could hide the boxes. I thought that I could then run a cable through the chimney breast (space already there) with a "magic eye" to control the boxes.

Looking at the literature on these devices, they seem to indicate that you must plug something in to another TV to control a TV in another room. All I want to do is to control 1 or 2 boxes that are not in the same room, not another TV.

Will these devices work for my situation or is there another product out there?
