3rd Party cover on Fully Comp policy?

Hi,

I have bought a camper and am insuring it fully comp. Part of the policy states that I can drive any other car, not owned by me and with the owners permission, on a 3rd party basis.

As I only need 3rd party insurance on my car, is it possible for me to change the ownership details of my car into my wife's name and drive it on a 3rd party basis through the camper insurance.

I can't find anything which states that the car has to be insured by anyone else.

My wife already has a car and insurance in her name.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes, however it will be impossible for you to tax it.

As Andy says, this is the problem, you cant tax it without insurance on the vehicle itself.

Many insurers are either restricting it, saying it is only for emergency use and not routine or actually removing the DOC extention from their policies.

Also, you would only have TPO cover so no cover at all for theft or fire. The other problem is if you have one of these rare accidents which are not driver related and your vehicle causes damage to someone elses property/ car then you yourself would have to fight/ pay it (eg your car goes up in flames in a car park and damages the vehicle parked next to it.)

I haved asked an insurance company about this before and was told that, if your policy allows it, you can drive another vehicle 3rd party, as long as said vehicle already had a policy on it too.

also with this your car would only be insured when your in it. there for as soon as you step out your car it is uninsured and should anything happen at this point you will have to pay for any damages. In the long run it would be easier and more sensible to just insure the car itsself. Many insurers will merit you no claims discount on both the camper an the car and you will probably find a decent qoute if you shop around
