    I don't even know what a perennial is!! :(
Annual plants last a year and die off, often producing seeds (or cuttings) for you to try and re-produce next year. Perenial come back every year, some will die off at the surface or are woody in nature.

Annual plants tend to be really pretty like you see on roundabouts etc but you have to dig them up when they die and re-plant new ones next year.

Bulbs by there nature will grow again (perenials) (as long as they don't rot in waterlogged earth,) but not all come back every year, tulips for example come bi-yearly.

Two types of bulbs those that flower in Spring, and those in Summer. You would plant the Spring ones end of Summer/Autumn and Summer ones end of Spring.

Most of them like well drained sunny positions.

In terms of where some grow quite tall those you might want to put at the rear of your beds

(I often forget where I've put bulbs but normally they don't mind being moved out of their season)

Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to write all of that...it really was very kind of you. I didn't know any of that!! I have learnt something new today :T :j

I ordered bulbs hoping I could just plant them and leave them to it, I really am not green fingered and would never find the time to dig up old plants and replace etc... so going by your advice, I think I'll be ok! :j

    THANK YOU :D:D:D:D:D

  • Hi Guys

I arrived here looking for a discount code but noticed all the concern about orders. I've been using these guys for years! I live in the Outer Hebrides and the weather is harsher here so I have more failures than most BUT Parkers have always been extremely good at refunds & delivery.

From past experience I know that Parkers will hold back on packing and posting an order if external influences, such as postage strikes, bad weather etc. may cause the plants problems. If anyone is overly concerned I would give them a phone, I have done this in the past and they were happy to explain that they had held back my order for a week due to an unusual warm spell which may have caused the plants to start growing too early if they were left in a warm place during delivery. This was years ago but I can't see them changing that much.

This is one of the best gardening sites I have ever used. The only other company I will use is Buckingham Garden Centre (hedging.co.uk) as I have had problems with other sites but not these 2.

    cheers

Can I say I totally agree with all the points made. I too have used the company for a number of years, and have also visited their shop. If I can make some observations after quite a few orders:

    - delivery dates for plants are very iffy and do depend on weather conditions. Companies do hold back, and will also hold back if quality is suspect. This is common practice.
    - Parkers always have offers on. They tend to sell some 'smaller' sized products. For example, small sized lily bulbs might be £1.45 for 5 with them, but top sized bulbs could cost 3 times this with another company. Same for shrubs. Again - comon practice that larger sized bulbs/shruns are sugnificantly more expensive
    - the quality of the plug plants/perennials is the same as comanies such as Thompson&Morgan. Many of these companies outsource to the channel isles (visited the nurseries actually) and use the same growers.
    - often plug plants/perennials will look a tad ill. It's not the compny's fault - it's having to send them by post. Parkers are very good at refunding, as are other companies, as they do understand the vagiaries of the post.

Hope this helps anyone new to planting! :)

PS - Wickerman, I envy you. Where you live is my idea of heaven!

No idea but I ordered common bamboo, strawberries, bulbs and phlox on the 2nd and haven't heard a thing. I hope my bamboo is more than a grass blade at £6.95!
