Creepy crawly in a chain restaurant salad, what would you do?

So here's what happened,

I had a meal out earlier in a restaurant (part of a larger chain) and there was a snail in the salad. At first I thought it was just a shell then it started moving.

The waitress took it away and brought a new one. The manager eventually came over (after mulling it over for 10 minutes!) and apologised and we had some money knocked off the bill. I guess I could have made a stance and asked for it all to be free but I didn't think the manager had any great authority and didn't want to cause a big fuss in a busy restaurant.

The salads apparently come in vacuum sealed packs and I know these things have been happening forever. I'm not sure what (if anything) I should do from here. The restaurant took my details and are making an investigation (they did all that), I don't know if this is dangerous to anyone else and if I should make authorities or anyone else aware this happened. From what I can gather it was an isolated incident as none of the staff knew what to do about it.

I'll accept suggestions and await some wisecracks;)

    I wouldn't eat it if I was a veggie

If you complain they might charge you more for the extra meat :)

If you were in France they just eat it the French like everything edible ;)

Were any of the children, that were sure to have been present traumatised, devastated, humiliated...or did they just giggle and point at it?

The time to do anything was when you were in the restaurant IMO. It doesn't sound like it did any harm and you had some money knocked off your bill. It might be the most memorable meal out that you have this year.

I was more wanting to know if it was a health hazard in general, it was handled pretty well and I wasn't too traumatized;)

No one did die as a result, no children were present and as far as I know the snail is still doing well. I'm working on the film, I'm trying to get Jude Law to play me and Dustin Hoffman for the snail:D

I am sure it is possible to choke on a snail, which would be a health hazard for both - a possible version for the film?

Although there is a hygeine issue - and it makes me feel a bit yeuch - snails crawl on salads all the time and how often do we all eat salad that is not thoroughly washed. I've only ever heard of the water that salad is washed in being a problem for stomach upsets.

I wasn't after financial reward, I merely wanted to know if it was a health risk or if the restaurant could do more. I know from watching that the salad comes in pre sealed vacuum packs that they do not wash before serving.
