Yes, I'm picky about Mothering Sunday :) and that's traditionally when we make simnel cake, it's supposed to be a gift for mothers (very OS), but nowadays people seem to have them at Easter.

Yes, i remember hearing that Simnel cake was for a daughter to show her mother she could cook. I had thought about making one for Mum, but wasn't sure if she would like it? I did look up threads in here some time ago, but didn't find any information about them being mother related, only easter related

There are several similar threads on Special Occasions board.

Can you knit? I'm making this free Alan Dart pattern (9 to make!):

Also going to make flannel bunnies and add some chocolate eggs or sweets of some description.

All going in homemade baskets like these:

I buy a selection of small chocolate eggs to hide in the garden for my three kids but that's it for Easter.

Gifts are for Christmas and birthdays in our household not Easter, Valentine's, Mothering Sunday, Halloween, or even wedding anniveraries.

If you are obliged to give something then I would go with little cakes or rice krispie cakes.

There was me beginning to think I was being mean :rotfl:. I completely agree with you. My children will get one egg each from us.

Many years ago I worked with a woman who bought her nephews and nieces expensive presents for Easter rather than give them chocolate. The whole idea really baffled me.

I'm a meany too! I've never bought my kids anything other than a large chocolate egg for Easter and all other littlies in the family (5 great nephews & nieces with 2 more on the way:eek:) get a small egg. They always end up with so many by the time everyone in the family has given them an egg.

    Instructions to make them here:

I like things that can be used after. I'm not putting eggs in mine though.

I've read it somewhere (possibly my BeRo book) I just found this after a quick search http://www.bbc.co.uk/shropshire/content/articles/2006/04/12/shrewsbury_simnel_cake_feature.shtml
