Bullying Bank

My partner had huge problems with bank charges from HSBC - 23 years as a customer and treated poorly. In the end he had no choice but to open another bank account with a competitor and get his salary paid into it, otherwise we would have ended up in hardship - he did this in January and regained control over his salary. We also clawed together £900 to get his HSBC overdraft back into the formal overdraft limit. He followed this up with an offer of payment to repay the remaining £1500. He started to receive 2,3, sometimes 4 calls a day asking why his account was in the state it was. The calls were from offshore so language and understanding is a huge barrier. They had no record of his letter. He then demanded a UK contact number which he has written to again and also phoned. he demanded the calls stop as he was feeling bullied. The calls have ceased but now we are receiving letters and they have brought my name into the equation (I can only assume as we have an old joint account which is empty). He is at his wits end as to what to do next. He has made an offer of payment which hasn't been acknowledged and now we have the written communications coming instead of the calls. Is this something for the Ombudsmen? Any advice would be most welcome.

The right step has been made by writing in - however it is possible that the letter never got to the bank (was it sent recorded?) or it must have gone to a different office/department and then got lost! To make sure that your letter gets delivered to the correct department, phone them or go in branch and get the exact contact details and then send the letter by recorded delivery. This way you will have proof if this needs to be taken further.
  • Thanks - he first wrote end January then again 2 weeks ago. Branch keep telling him they can't help and he must ring the call centre. Thanks for advice re Recorded Delivery, will do that immediately. Guess we are on the right track then.

Might be worth browsing the "Debt-free Wannabe" board as this sounds on the face of it like a situation that the posters on there would have useful experience of?
