we only had one large nightstorage and electric panel heaters had it removed early last december as it was old and now it doesnt suit our lifestyle (out during the day) but had used it for the last ten years and (NS) worked out around £5 a week to run.
As JasX has said insulating is the key. we had our loft lagged on a grant that made a huge difference from day one. lined curtains pulled at dusk to keep the warmth in etc etc.
The economy 7 tarrif is what most people with nightstorage are on, do check tho. Its around 4p a unit from midnight to seven Am (check times with your supplier) so you need to plan to use as much of this cheaper electric as possible. timers fitted to washing machine/dryers, laptops and moblies charged during the wee hours.
When my kids were small id get up at 5/6 am (im a early riser anyway) and get my baking/ironing done before the meter clocked over. a cottage pie could be cooked cheap and reheated in the micro later in the day. we run all the usual gadgets and im not an energy hitler and are using around 20 units a day which is quite a lot compare to some.
we are in the process of having oil CH fitted but by my math it will cost me at least an extra £400 PA moving away from all electric as it will only save me at most 6 units a day from not using the immersion water heater but i will cost me £400+ to fill the oil tank.
If moving to this house would make you happier then go for it, just keep tabs on the meter readings each week there are sites like smart meter & i measure that do the math and make it easy.
Best of luck0 -
I used to rent a one bed terraced flat which only had electric and those frustrating night storage heaters and through the winter i'd go through £130 a month to keep me warm I also had to buy some of those electric heaters which would have added to that.
Summer was obviously better but it would still be at least £20 a week on the electric.
I must add that I inherited prepayment meters so that must have pushed the price up!!
There are grants available for getting GCH installed even on rented accomadation but it will depend on what benefits etc you are getting and i believe it varies for area to area.
Good luck0 -
Thank you tori.k
Will take some adjusting to this by the sounds of it, but yes, I do really like the house, garden, location etc so I may just have to learn to be more thrifty.
Midnight Iron etc :rotfl: Plus will check out those websites you mentioned... thanks
Tartanmax...thank you too. Interesting you got the grant. I googled it and saw that private rental should be fine, child under 16 and income support, so in principle, I should get accepted for this but don't think I can apply til living in there, so would be something to sort out during the Summer months and also if they don't pay full amount, will ask Landlord but may not be an essential to them.
Many thanks everyone
