Minimum income to cover £1000 rent pcm

our combined income is 36k and we are renting a flat for 950pcm, bills and council tax are about £200 on top of that and we live comfortably. our letting agent's requirement was that rent cannot be more than 50% of take-home pay

I'd just like to add that our debts are minimum, less than a month's salary so we do not spend much on debt repayments. It is a good point to remember that sometimes debt repayments can eat up a large chunk of your income

I paid £600 per month and I only earned £18k at the time. And I managed ok and saved.
