Get yourself a roughguide, I found it invaluable. Once you arrive get yourself an Oz PAYG sim and you can book hostels and activities etc as you arrive! If you decide on a car, hire before you go. I'd recommend a trip to Katoomba - blue moutains if you can, its nr Sydney.
Good Luck with the planning and have a great time!0 -
Hey!
I've just booked flights to OZ!(new years/Jan) .. anyways i've been researching routes/travel ideas and came across the Virginblue Air Pass ... Adelaide -> Melbourne -> Brisbane -> Sydney works out $247 (about £150)

Easily done by local train from Sydney and you can all sit and watch the local scenery go by without worrying about getting lost :j
. Then when you get there is a circular bus which takes you all round the area - get on and off as you like to visit the different places of interest.0 -
I'd think hard before booking car hire in either Sydney or Melbourne. We have driven into the Sydney area and found it a nightmare with traffic and toll roads. Melbourne has a free circular tram which gets you around the city and plenty of other trams to get you to the coast if you want.
We've just come back from Oz (Perth and Brisbane mainly) and it's certainly pretty expensive now. Prices seem to have increased over the past couple of years and the exchange rate is diabolical.
You'll enjoy it though, but remember that although you'll get generally warm weather, Melbourne particularly can be a bit variable.0 -
merlinormartin - can you please let me know who you are flying with for Christmas/ New year? I am trying to book flights at the mo to see my family for Christmas but the flight are really expensive. Desperately trying to find a cheap deal!0

Hey
We booked with Cathy Pacific worked out £££ each including a 6 day stop over in HK. Airchina had the same dates for £670 but we wanted to stop in HK.
Check the following sites every few hours for the best fares ...
Skyscanner
Netflights
Opodo
** Today isnt the best day to look ,,, flight prices seem to decrease mid-week."Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone, and do not be troubled about the future, for it has yet to come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering"0
