Scotland on the cheap!

Just wanted to boast!
Wife and I have a week off in August, and were looking for something relatively cheap....we did go to China in May after all! We have never done Scotland properly, so OH suggested it, but I thought....no way. We live inn South of England, so a long way to travel.
Well, pure luck on timings, but got Ryanair flights from Bournemouth to Glasgow at 0-99p, (plus tax)., and I have hired an Avis car for nothing, using Tesco vouchers.
OK. What else can I save on. We want to drive to Skye, stay a couple of nights, maybe 3 and motor up to John O Groats. Maybe a boat trip somewhere (we have done Mull)
Any more ideas would be fun!

There's no other place to be in Scotland during August other than Edinburgh. The Festival is on during the whole of August. Obviously it's not a cheap time to be here be there's always an amazing atmosphere here during that time.
I can also recommend camping almost everywhere in Scotland. Loch Lomond is beautiful, eaily accessible and has plenty of walks.0 -
Well if you are planning going to Skye, i would say you are best to go from Glasgow up past Fort William to Inverness (logical way, prolly what you were planning!). From there then cut west, going to places such as Gairloch and Ullapool. They are very nice if you get reasonable weather. The cheapest way of doing it? Well, enquire through 'discover britain' i think it is called, for B&Bs, try and find the names of ones you like, and then try and contact them directly, that way you will get a much better price.
A night in Fort William, then up past Loch Ness to Inverness, from there you can go west, lovely scenery etc. If you are wanting to go all the way north you could do a day trip to Orkney, its not far from John O'Groats. On the way up, places in Sutherland like Helmsdale are very nice and quite welcoming with lively local pubs and stuff.0
