You will still be charged for the call, even if it is a toll-free number.

If you use Skype, you can call toll-free numbers in the US for free (from any country).

actually, you cannot make toll free numbers outside of the USA..I had to call their regular number. i know that a "free" number would have never been free outside of USA...

Hmm, I've always managed to call them I just get the message "Please be aware that calls to this number are not free from outside the United States. If you do not wish to be charged for this call, please hang up now".

My experience is exactly the opposite (calling via a BT line and using 18185 as the carrier).

I simply added the 001 prefix before the 800 part of the number and connection was immediate.

    Cost, 1p/minute.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I have also be able to call at toll free number in the US, but I was well aware that it was chargeable at either 1p or 0.5p/min depending on which prefix number I used.

You can use a calling card as well, I call the US on toll free and normal numbers all the time from my mobile for 1p per minute plus the allocation of my free minutes. Calling from home using my free evening calls package would just be 1p per minute.

If you have better call rates to UK than to USA, then you might use Sipbroker

dial access number, pause, then * then number (no int'l prefix) e.g. 02071006747p*1800.......
