Most of the threads I've read are for higher spec laptops & I'm a bit of a novice so am looking for some help....please.
My daughter ,who is 18 next month and off to Uni in Sept/Oct, said she wouldn't mind a laptop which would come in really useful when she's studying.
I'm guesing it will be internet, burning cds and maybe even word for her studies. I was kind of hoping to get away with c.£350 or less. What are the chances?
Would be very grateful for any info.Thanks.

Dell Inspiron 1300, you will get one on the Dell website for about £350 maybe even less if you keep a good eye on their weekly offers.
Cracking machines, but make sure you get the 6 cell battery, and the 15.4" screen helps too. Tad heavy at 3KG but nothing too bad.0 -
Try Misco.co.uk I have just bought one for a friend with built in wireless connectivity for £380, its an Acer.... I bought my desk top from them some years ago and its been brilliant....... wish I had bought my laptop from them too.....but thats another story.

only advice i ever give on these threads now:
you wouldn't buy bread and milk from Dell, so don't buy computers from Tescos or Woolworths.0 -

This is not bad for the cash Fujitsu Siemens are a good make and this have DVD rewriter, good memory, ok size hard drive and a decent screen size.

Don't you just love the cheek of some of these firms:
3 year Extended Warranty?
...Half the price you paid for the laptop!

to be fair a 3 year extended warranty... what are you expecting... in an extra 3 years theres a good chance something will be wrong with the laptop... even something minor can cost a fair amount to rapair, and so that extra warranty is a risk for a manufacturer.
(although yes, it is still a rip off)0 -
Err... Why not? Is it necessary to buy what are close to commodities now from a specialist firm? [thinks - would Lord_Chris prefer to buy from PC World?!]You wouldn't buy bread and milk from Dell, so don't buy computers from Tescos or Woolworths.
Tesco and Woolworths may well be selling a good product fairly cheaply. You have to assess whether your possible future need for direct customer support outweighs the price reduction. And, via other sources, you have to check whether the laptop does what you want. But since I've seen a couple of Acers in Tesco, I don't think I would have been put off getting them from Tesco rather than from Staples (for example).
