DSG broke their own contract

I bought a computer from PC World and the sales advisor added the technical support for £7.99 per month.

I thought that I was entitled to a 14 day cooling off period so I had to phone an 0844 number to cancel it, which I duly did on day 14.

They have just returned £5.99 of the money paid for the useless service. Apparently there were 2 policies attached to the computer (which was bought as a single package), one for the computer and one for the monitor. Well I'm now tied to a contract of £2.00 per month forever despite my request to cancel the technical support policy.

I won't ever be shopping at PC World ever again.

And to rub salt into the wound, I can't imagine how much they've gained from me via the telephone calls.

    Chill!

Unless things have changed, PC World extended warranties can be cancelled at any time, and are only valid as long as you pay the monthly premium.

i.e. you cancel the direct debit and the cover stops.

You cannot be forced to pay £2 forever/as long as you live :)

Out of interest, what statutory right have you been denied? It's not clear from your post
  • Thanks, Darksun, it's not a statutory right that has been broken (as I had previously stated) but their own contract which they verbally stated gave me 14 days to cancel. I was provided with only one policy so I foolishly assumed that there was only one policy to cancel.

Now that the 14 day period has lapsed I am no longer entitled to a refund from a second policy that I will not be using.

Thanks xocbc, but I have been trying to get through on the 0844 telephone number to cancel but it is permanently busy and we value your custom. Listening to the banal message seems like forever and it is costing me lots to try to get through.

If it's a direct debit, cancel it with your bank, if it's on a credit card keep ringing them and never sign up to a CPA again :p
PCWorld won't really be making money from the 0844 call either..

You can just cancel the DD, does the same job as cancelling via the WEH phone line.

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

I really cannot understand why you took out these policies in the first place.

Having agreed to take them (you did pay for them), why did you not cancel both of them? Aren't they both are mentioned on your receipt?
  • Thanks Williham & Esqui, I've managed to cancel my direct debit via my bank. Not something that the PCWorld blurb informs that you can do. I thought that the 0844 number was an expensive help line that they were trying to keep me on as long as possible.

KeithP, I was sold these policies through fear of not getting a new computer working. The store manager told me that if I have problems with setting up the computer I could ring the help line and if I had no problems then I could cancel it in 14 days.

I would have cancelled them both, but they are listed under one item on the receipt as "Whatever happens".

Anyway, I think it's all resolved. I've lost £2 and it would cost more to try to recover that.

    Thanks for all your help.
