Go with Windows 2k, it is miles more stable than any of the other microsoft offerings the system should run it happily too.
The problems your getting are proberbly down to junk software and the system hasnt been formated and reinstalled for a while bit of old software all over the place. Also dont forget you will need to install the codecs for each type of video your trying to play xvid/divx ect.0
