Student renting?

I'm a student and I intend to live with my boyfriend who works full time, another student friend and another guy who works full time. None of us have ever rented before, we have cash funds and should never fall short of rent. I've been and asked my uni for help on how we go about renting all they said was go to the estate agents, so we popped into two today and said we were far too early and would have to look around six weeks in advance. Could anyone provide a little insight? Many many thanks!!!

It depends whether you want student housing or "normal" housing. Student houses generally get signed up now for September. Normal housing a few weeks before.

Check the council tax carefully. The students will be exempt so the burden of the whole council tax falls on the two non-students.

Again it depends very much on where you are and what you after. Normal housing does tend to be arranged 1-2 months before moving, sometimes a little less.

Student accomodation on the other hand can be quite a lot earlier, 6-9 months in some cases. Actual practices vary between cities. I suggest talking to older students who are already renting, and perhaps go back to the accomodation office and ask for more explicit guidance.

The problem is that with a mixed house you are stuck between the two systems - you might struggle to prove your credit for a normal place, and you might find that student landlords book up at a given time of year only (although there are always more cancellations and late availabilities than you would think).

Thanks very much for your help everyone. I admit I don't a thing, and rely on google to answer questions involving this matter. Any idea how I can prove my credit? I have money I don't rely on student loans, and will have a part time job..

Does your SU not a housing Office? Problem you may find is that your traditional student landlord/ladies won't touch non students.
