How can I find out who the Management Company is?

I'm looking to buy a flat, which is currently a reposession so I can not get any details of the management company who manage the building. Does anyone know the best way to try and find out what I can?

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Simone

Google, go down there and ask the neighbours, ask the EA?

Defo ask one of the neighbours as this was the case with a friend and who found out instantly.

Remember that there is a distinction between a managing agent and a management company.

A managing ganet (sorry typo - I meant agent) could be a company such as Solitaire or Peverel or Simarc but only act as agent for the freeholder whereas a management company will have a distinct legal role under the lease and may in turn have a managing agent to do the work for it. Sometimes the managing agent and the freeholder look suspiciously connected, but that's another matter!

You really need to know who the freeholder is and also who manages the property. There are certain freeholders/managing agents to look out for and if they are involved you need to think long and hard about whether to buy the flat.

You can also get a copy of the freehold title from the Land Registry (the gov.uk site) and then Google the name to see what comes up!

Finding out the names otherwise probably does mean knocking on the doors of other flats because usually the estate agents don't know the answer.

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.
  • Thank you, I think I'll start with the land registry and the neighbours and go from there.
