When can I plant seed potatoes?

davidscot - I used to live in Argyll and an old farmer there said I shouldn't put any potatoes in the ground before 9th April (easy one for me to remember as my birthday
) so that by the time the shoots started coming through, the danger of frost would be just about over.
Also I suppose the ground would have warmed up a bit by then. I did that successfully for many years and although I now live in central Scotland I still wait until the beginning of April at least before putting my tatties out in their pots. I will start chitting them soon though on the south facing kitchen window.
