How do I fit glazing film to my sash windows?

Hi,

My old wood sash windows are rotting apart but i just cannot afford to fix them at present.

I've bought some of this: http://www.focusdiy.co.uk/Insulation/Double-Glazing-Film-6m-/invt/119351

Below is a picture very similar to my sash window.

In red shows the gap in between the two sliding parts between the windows. This is where the majority of air comes from.

In purple is the gap between the glass and the wooden frame, which is quite large, as the wood has dropped.

My question is, am I meant to fit this as shown in Green or Blue?

My worry is that is I try and fit it as shown in Blue, then I will not be able to cover the Purple gap due to the way the window timber has dropped.

The window is 90cm wide x 160cm long.

Thank you.

If you are trying to get a cheap alternative to double glazing then forget about that film. The windows are letting i draughts throw all the gaps around the window, wyou would be better off just stuffing newspaper in to the gaps.

The film covers the entire window. Tape it to the outer frame. You could fill the gaps you mention in advance to cut down the air infiltration because if it's too bad the wind can sometimes break the adhensive bond. Try using troweling grade mastic to fill the gaps. It's simple to use and can be raked out easily if you need to later. Your windows are just like those my my current rented house. The film does make a big difference. I've used it here and in a two previous cruddy rentals. For what it costs it gives a good return on just improving the basic confort levels by reducing draughts. Can't say I've worked out its cost justification on saved energy - for £7 or so, who'd be bothered.

The downsides are, it look hideous, you don't get enough tape in the pack and the manufacturer tells big porkies about how easily the adhesive comes off the window frame - it doesn't.

Waste of time & money. This is not designed to stop draughts.

As explained in several other threads, take kitchen clingfilm and stuff into the gaps with a blunt knife. This will stop draughts.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

Well I taped up the windows with White Duct Tape. That has cut down the draughts.

Then I used this as shown in green, on the entire window frame.

You CAN see it. It is ugly. But Those two methods combined have cut down the big draughts and therefore made the room much better.

the duct tape will come off in no time from moisture and damp

I should have explained the clingfilm method is invisible, so it's not ugly. Certainly better than duct tape! Best of luck.
