My advice (for what it is worth), be honest and upfront with them, tell them your situation. If they are one of the major national's they will have something in place to deal with your situation as long as you are upfront.

Hope it goes well for you.
    Debts as of June 2012 - £68,986.35
    Now £27,470.20 :T

I agree - be honest. I work in a government post and when I applied for the job I had to go through security vetting. I was terrified when I found out because I really wanted the job but I knew they would pick up on my debts. They did, and they called me in, but I was totally upfront and they accepted it all and I got the job. I'm sure your husband will fine!

    Best of luck!

    Thank you everyone.

As I mentioned my husband has been in retail management for over 6 years and this is the first time he has been asked for a credit check so it was a bit of a shock. The covering letter does state that the search will only take place if and offer of employment is made. What my DH was panicking about was they would offer him the job, do the check, then phone back and say they'vr changed their minds.

He really wants this job as it's closer to home, so less travelling involved. Which in a way means more money to pay off our debts.

As far as we're aware DH only has one default (we only received one default notice) for our joint loan. This goes back to 2008 when he was made redundant with no pay, five days before pay day by the collapse of Motorworld LTD.

However I have several defaults against my name due to Lloyds Credit Card refusing to accept the CCCS payment every month. That won't affect DH's credit score will it?

Unfortunately defaults these days are so common that many people do have them - my friends works at RBS HR and he says there are so many people with defaults on their record - its so common - I wouldn't worry about it too much,

A DV clearance requires a lot of checking, including your financial status. As you say, there is only one thing you can do in this situation - be totally honest and open with the employer doing the checking.

To the OP - you may find they are less concerned with any 'blemish' on your credit status and more concerned with your ability to be frank and honest with them.

Best of luck with husband's application BTW :)

i just went through 3 stages of interviews with one of the big banks. got the job but subsequently got turned down after the credit check. this was a 10k payrise for me and wud haf really helped with paying the debts bak. they tried appealing but the defaults alone causd my rejection. i have no ccj's either. so i would still apply for other roles just in case

BTW it is getting more and more common (or it seems to be) that prospective employers want to credit check you. I saw an advert for sky customer services (i am pretty sure it was sky) who said they also credit check people prior to final job offers.

LOL - sky don't subscribe to CRA's nor do they credit check their customers so highly unlikely they will credit check staff - plus don't sky outsource everything other than their Livingstone operation? Here in Leeds they come under the Ventura (Next group) banner (call centre).....

I doubt they will credit check their Indian colleagues who, lets be honest, are usually the ones selling our card details..... lol

which part of government exactly? I used to deal with vetting (internal fraud policy manager) and never once done credit checks as it was always classed as irrelevant to the post..... Vetting consists of background and persona checks, not financial checks (not unless you ended up going in as an SEO or numerical grade/director entry).....

I wish we did do it personally, it would have helped me to filter out some of the tea-leaves that used to pay benefit into their own account and the like! But as I say, we never!

I think some councils have adopted the idea, certainly as long as CallCredit offer the employment financial check for a measly £1.... it's money well spent some would say.

However being in debt cannot be used as a barrier to employment offer unless it is specific to the role in mind, i.e. an accountant cannot be in debt nor can a MI6 agent but an MI5 agent can be upto a certain level (don't ask! - international vs homecountry laws differ somewhat!)

As everyone else says, don't worry about it too much - the point is a lot of people in the world are in debt right now, including the banks themselves! What, because Citi have just been demoted to a D rating does that mean we sack everyone cos they are rubbish with money! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

So checking on peeps money means the bankers will be out of work ? Oh no they are so good with OUR money aren;t they. Try not to worry honesty is always best at the vary start.
After all if we all were checked everyone in the country practicaly would be out of work. Surely getting back to work is the most important thing to get outselves back in the black and we have to start somewhere

companys do it due to handling of credit card details, money, bank details etc even argos do
I worked for argos a year or so back but I was never asked for a credit report...

Generally only high end jobs such as independant financial advisors, mortgage advisors etc would be expected to tell them about any formal insolvency proceedings but I've never heard of defaults going against anyone or indeed a credit report being requested.
