Hi all,

Without boring everyone to tears about my circumstances , I am in the situation right now where I need to get a second car. I have full NCB bonus (protected) on the main one. Whats the cheapest way to insure the second car as I understand the NCB won't count on that one.

Generally the NCB can only be applied to one car, but....

Try ringing around and asking if you can get a policy covering both cars with one NCB. My bf has two cars and called Admiral, and asked for the NCB to be applied to both cars. They will tell you several times that they can't do it but if you keep asking and say you've seen other people doing it they will apply the NCB to both cars. My bf was unhappy with Admiral for other reasons so later went to MoreThan - he asked them to apply the same deal and they did it no problems. Just be persistent when you call up the companies. Good luck!

Admiral Multicar? You don't have to add both cars at the same time, its quite sensible really, you insure the first one, then when renewal for the second comes around you add that one on as well and get a 10% discount on both.

You still have a seperate NCB for each car on a muticar policy.
When I've insured a second vehicle I've always gone through a broker, and they have managed to get my NCB mirrored on the new policy as a discount.

Ah yes, but you still get the 10% discount on both.

My problem with multicar is that the second car only gets insured till the end of the insurance term on the first car, which won't be a full year, so does that mean you won't accrue a years no claims discount on it?

On a separate note, Admiral insurance gives a cheaper quote if you park on the street instead of the driveway, which could mean that we park our cars on the road and leave the drive empty to save £60!
  • try tesco insurance, i insured my van with them while my car had full no claims being used on it though Admiral, Tesco matched the discount like for like, all I had to do was to givee them the policy number of the Admiral insurance and they did the rest, saved me nearly 350 quid

Thanks so much for that! Just put it through and it'll save me almost £100 next year at uni. And this is parking in Manchester !!!!!!! How is it less risk?

Do they get a lot of claims from when ppl reverse on/off awkward driveways?

    One possible reason!

Certainly a possibility! I was thinking more that the car was surely at less risk from theft/vandalism on the driveway than the road, especially in Manchester, but apparently not...
