painting a cast iron fireplaces

Options
hi,

i have fireplaces in 2 bedrooms of my house that i wish to paint black. what paint should i use?

they are currently painted in an old cream gloss, which i would rather not have to strip before painting, as there isnt that much detail to the fireplaces and they will only be used for decoration

Just done this job, I brought a cast iron fire place off ebay, which was painted white, and in a sorry state. I got some stove paint and wow. It looks great, its just a spray can, cost £12 from fireplace shop. The results are really good!

Hammerite was fine for the ones in my bedrooms and 10 years on still looking good.

I doubt very much that you'd be able to use a bedroom open fire legally these days.

Why not? No different than fire in a lounge.
  • first it is no ilegal to have a open fire in a bedroom , but second you say it does not have much detail , if you were to take a grinder with a wire brush on it you would proberly be suprised at the amount of detail that would show under the years of gloss paint
