Need help with Santander case!

I wrote to Santander trying to reclaim Account Cover (ppi) from an old evans account opened in June 2003 and closed start of this year.
I am trying to reclaim based on misselling due to the fact i didnt realise it was optional AND i was unemployed at the time as i was a full time student.
I received a letter in return the main points being: the process in place was to make clear it was not compulsory, that i signed the box which stated sign here if you require Account Cover, that i had chance to change my mind within 30 days and cancel, that this cover has been showing on my statements ever since.
Also they want proof i was unemployed at the time and have requested a copy of National Insurance Premiums paid for the 2003/04 year.
Now here is where im a little confused and would really appreciate some advice!
I opened the account (and account cover) in June 2003, i was a full student at this time - therefore was paying no national insurance premiums. In August-ish time i signed on for JSA as i had left university. While on JSA you have your national insurance premium paid for you.
So my National Insurance statement - shows that i was 27 weeks short for that year. (obviously the time i was at uni) (infact im not sure if that statement is correct, but im definatly short by half a year for the time i was at university).
Surely this statement will not show Santander that i was an unemployed student when i took out the account cover?? As it does not state when in the year i had paid premiums and when i hadnt and it will also look like i worked for half the year (because it doesnt show that i was on JSA having national insurance paid for me for those months)
How can i send them proof of my unemployment at the time? please can somebody help me. Sorry for such a long post! Im just not sure where to go from here

Given that you only need to keep earnings records for six years, that seems an unreasonable requirement. I presume, though, that you have evidence that you were a student at the time.
If, for example, you graduated at the age of 21 in 2004 then that would mean three years of full time study post age 18. This would not necessarily be definitive proof but if I were looking at such a case I would take the view, on the balance of probability that it was true.0
