What Sleep Aids Work For You On Long Haul Flights

My friend is travelling on a long haul flight nex month. She likes seeing other countries but is a very nervous/stressed flyer which is not good on long haul flights. She also suffers from eczema and as she gets stressed about the flight her skin gets worse. She also gets irritable legs. She asked the doctor for something to help her sleep on the long haul flight but they would not give her anything. Is there anything anyone recommends you can either buy at the pharmacy or health food shops etc. Sleeping most of it would cure the cause. She has tried rescue remedy and kalms before but no effect. thx.

Maybe a better option is Piriton as its a lot less heavy duty. I know someone who used it and they sleeped like a baby. Alternatively nite nurse or similar.

Personally i dont like taking anything as I like to feel half decent at the end of the flight.

    Good luck

Is your friend travelling alone, and how long is the flight?

I would not be surprised if her eczema plays up irrespective of how calm she is. Whatever precautions I take, my eczema is always bad after a flight.

    Hiya,

My OH is also a nervous flyer & before we go abroad he visits the doctor & gets Diazepam 2mg tablets. He starts taking them the night before the flight then again in the airport. I would tell your friend to go back to her doctor & emphasise how stressed it makes her.

A GP does not have to prescribe medication for travel, and there are several good reasons not to do so. If the GP has said no, I doubt very much that they will change their mind.

i find night flights or late evening flights the easiest to sleep on and a glass of red wine with a drowsy hayfever tablet.
Morning flights going west are the worst for me.

Thankfully, I've never suffered from fear of flying, excema, stress or irritable legs (connected with flying or otherwise :)) -- if your friend needs help in the sleeping department, couldn't she just not go to bed the night before, leaving her completely knackered, so that she'll sleep through the long haul flight ?
