I think when you have that sort of give and take attitude these problems don't occur. I think it's when employers are inflexible that employees get moany. I have worked in a few places where people have put in so much unpaid overtime, yet if they have to come in 15 minutes late one day the boss throws a wobbly and makes them pay back every minute. I had a colleague who did hundreds of hours of unpaid overtime since she had been with the company. One morning her train crashed and she was late as the fire brigade had to rescue them from their carriage. The boss insisted she had to make the time up that night!

What a fcuking C**k. Obviously got some kind of ego problem. Hope their train crashes some day soon!

No you are not alone. Whinging is a pet hate of mine, okay we all do it, but some people.............. geez.

I can totally understand though, that there are some employers who are not so great on the old give and take and many whose hands are quite simply tied in that the rules have to be kept to for fear of some taking the mickey.

I actually heard just the other day that one employee where I work has said she only does half a day's worth of work cos that's all she feels she is paid for. She's been with the firm for nearly 30 years and they are a bloody good firm - how sad to have that attitude. The only downside is that sometimes where I work and with other places is that it often doesn't do anything for your career progression to be seen to be more helpful and conscientious than others in going the extra mile. I can understand sometimes why people feel they shouldn't bother cos they won't get treated any better.

I've seen so many idiots get on in life just through being pushy and cocky while the real work is being done by someone quieter just getting on with it.

Mu old boss made a point of saying to everyone if we were a bit late in the morning, we could work it over at the end of the day and that was fine because we were all adults, we all had lives and he trusted us not to take the p*ss. And you know what? We didn't take the p*ss, because we appreciated the fact we were treated with respect and not treated like naughty schoolkids if we were a bit late.

The same went if we needed to leave a bit early, we could just work through our lunch break, or put in the extra time across the week. But if we needed to work overtime to get something done, we did it without complaint because we wanted to help the company out. If you have the trust both ways, I've found that carrot works better than stick.
Do good deeds and you could raise the curtain, do good deeds and you could really raise your life....

5 minutes is fine but its when the employer has no flexibility back whilst expecting flexible staff

If you are five minutes late a few times, or spend half the day in the bog, they will easily find someone else who doesn't do those things.

I really do think it depends on the nature of the job and the people undertaking that work. Sadly, where someone is being paid not a lot and is in a 'low level' job I think there is an increasing tendency to work to rule. THis has to work both ways though and whilst I would never dream of moaning about workign late / weekends I would equally be tamping mad if I got pulled up for being 5 minutes late.

The key difference to me is between a job and a career. I can remember my secretary once saying to me (and for the record she is a brilliant secretary who will have a job for as long as she wants it); 'for me this is a job, I take pride in it but at 5 I'm out of the door'. Fair enough I say.

Depends what the 5 minutes causes for you. For some people it might mean having to get a bus or train an hour earlier or later. If you drive, 5 minutes is just 5 minutes, but on public transport it can make much more difference, which will then cause childcare issues for those with responsibilities.
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

Ive worked as a cleaner in a residential home, which i hated, now i have a well paid job that I love. Its give and take in everything really. Its also about having pride and a sense of responsibility in your work. I would never have left a dirty toilet for the person next to me to clean up even if I had my coat on and was on my way out the door. In return, your colleagues will hopefully do the same for you. I often work past my hours in my job now, but as its with vulnerable children, it kinda comes with the territory. could never clock off in the middle of a crisis. So as a result, my boss doesn't complain if i need to leave early now and again.

    I think it's very funny.

Those moaning about the 5 minutes here and there are basically just inching their way closer to their P45.

What if it was seven mins? or 12 or 19. At some point employees have to take a stance. If not certain unscrupulous employers would walk all over them.

When did moaning become a sacking offence?
