What documents do I take to a car service?

Or do they just provide you with the documentation on completion of the service? Is service history recorded in one log book or as individual documents? Quite new to this.

If the car has a service book take that and get it stamped. Keep the invoice in a safe place to back it up.

Some manufacturers (eg Mazda) no longer issue service books. They will print out the service record for you after each service (obviously only available if you use a Mazda dealer).

When you bought the car, it should have come with a service booklet as well as the manual. Although the 2 might be in the same book, you'll have to have a leaf through. Basically somewhere there should be several pages of squares where the garage can stamp at the corresponding place to say the service has been done. So if you want the stamp you can take that along, otherwise they'll give you a receipt which you should keep as its much more solid evidence of the service than a stamp that can be subject to fraud.
The long and short is you don't HAVE to take anything at all.

And your keys :p Obvious, I know, but I was once so busy giving instructions, handing over paperwork and wheel nuts etc. that I just pocketed my car keys and walked out.

Make sure they stamp the bodywork inspection as well as the service stamp, if it has a seperate page. (always had to go back for mine when I noticed they hadn't done it)
