I only ever had sheep in my house once, by accident :D and chased 'em out before they could do any more than a few muddy hoofprints. But my sheep and lambs wee and sprinkle their pelleted gifts indiscriminately and without warning, so a fair bit of mess, I'd wager!

Yup, exactly the same as my goats! Can't say I ever managed to toilet train those either!

There's an idea Julie, if you can't get another lamb as a friend, how about a young goat? They make great tasting curry too ;)

Have you ever seen a Greek slaughter or are you getting your information from the doom-mongers on this thread? Do you go and protest outside all the Halal butchers in your area? If you don't like the thread report it to abuse or stop reading.

Was that aimed at my post about "backyard slaughter"? If so, that is exactly how it's done in rural locations in Italy, and also, I believe, in Greece. It is very much a Halal method of slaughter.

My parents' neighbours, who are farmers, have offered them several orphaned lambs and one orphaned calf. My friend's dad, also a farmer, offered me an orphaned lamb once.
Never took any of them up on it because we didn't have the time to look after them. Looking after orphaned lambs can be a pain in the bum and takes up time that many farmers just don't have to spare, so it isn't uncommon for them to be given away to family and friends.

Maybe times have changed then but we always kept the orphans on the farms and either mucked in together to bottle feed before returning to flock to wean, or would use a foster sheep who maybe had lost her own lambs.

I know someone who had two lovely young goats as field pets with their horses. One day they heard a bit of a kerfuffle in their kitchen and went to see what was up - the goats had escaped their field and come into the kitchen, and had hopped up on the worktops to explore, knocking things down as they went

I love goats, wish I good have some. Never tried eating them though, only goat milk/cheese etc.

Re lamb being fatty, some breeds such as my Shetlands produce a leaner less fatty meat :)

Re slaughter methods, don't forget the overall experience when considering what goes on abroad - possibly comparing straight from the field to slaughter versus days crowded in a hot airless lorry...

    Cheers

Oh I have absolutely no problem at all with it, as long as whoever is doing the slaughter is competent and experienced. Probably best not to delve much further into it on this thread though as wouldn't want the OP to feel obliged to admit to something which isn't entirely legal in this country ;)

Love your story about the goats! The antics mine used to get up to, much naughtier than young children but so adorable with it! :D

I don't think times have changed in the farming community, they still seem to be stuck in the 1950's round where I was brought up :D
My parents' neighbours have never been particularly enthusiastic farmers, I think they just didn't want to be bothered with the bottle-fed lambs. If you look at it from an entirely financial perspective, rather than from the POV of someone who likes animals, there's no money in bottle feeding them.
They aren't exactly great farmers though so probably not the best example.
My friend's dad really put the effort into looking after his sheep, most of their orphaned lambs did get looked after by their kids or settled with a foster mum. Some of them were given to family and friends, but not because he couldn't be bothered to look after them himself. I wasn't saying it's that common, but it does happen.

On the other hand, when I posted that I wasn't aware that the OP lived in north London. It does put a slightly different slant on things, although not to the extent that I'd automatically assume that they're lying.

laurauk - I'm sure you don't mean it but your posts are coming across as quite rude!

About lamb being fatty - I remember being told that beef is worse for you than lamb, because with lamb you can cut off most of the fat whereas with beef the fat is more tightly bound up with the meat. Anyone else heard of this?
