Volunteering at Glastonbury for Shelter
Not sure where to post this, but had it through in an email this morning.

Missed out on Glastonbury tickets? You could still be there if you volunteer for Shelter!
Glastonbury is the biggest festival of the summer and its 40th year looks set to be the best yet, with an amazing line-up and fantastic atmosphere! Tickets are completely sold out, but we’re offering you the chance to work in the bar areas for Avalon Bars and Events.
You don’t need previous experience and you’ll be fully trained. All we ask is that you work three eight hour shifts, leaving you free the rest of the time to see your favourite bands and have fun!
Avalon makes a donation to our work with homeless and badly housed people in exchange for your help. And you’ll get:
Sound like fun?

Yeah, I was about to post this. Sounds like a great way to get into Glastonbury for free. I bet you have to be quick!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Hey, I've just received this email too, do we know it's definately genuine? I'm just cautious because of the £100 deposit. Maybe I'm just too used to people trying to scam me lol!
ThanksReclaiming for family and friends. Won 4/13 so farHSBC CC - £263.25, Halifax CC - £179.45, HFC PPI - £589.00, HSBC PPI - £498.86, Lloyds PPI 1 - £4000 -
I've looked on the Shelter website and read the FAQ's - it looks quite legit. I read somewhere that Oxfam have a similar deposit based scheme.
If you were feeling really charitable, I guess £100 is not a lot to pay for transport, Glasto, camping and cheap drinks. Now proud Mumto3 :j0 -
We’ve now filled all our volunteer places for Glastonbury.
Add your details to the waiting list and we will contact you if anyone drops out or more places become available. We'll also make sure you're the first to know about volunteering opportunities at other festivals0/2013

you get the £100 back if you turn up for all your shifts on time etc..0 -
I have worked at festivals the past twenty years in the bars as a volunteer.
The list below may help you .
in general if you go as a volunteer you need to give them a deposit { say £ 200 or £ 250 } and provided you stick to the shifts you will get it back { although it may take a few weeks to process }
In general you may not have a choice of shifts so you have to be flexible .
The facilities will vary - some groups will have better facilities than others but in general it should be far safer than camping in the ticket holder area.
I work for the WBC and we have a excellent camp - great bar and food tents - loads of showers and toilets and very good security and its a great crowd of people but there will always be a few who show up - complain about the shifts - stand about and not really keen to work - its dead simple - they will not get the chance of working with the WBC in future .
Lucky enough I run a very experienced Team so I don't have to watch them like a hawk but I do know that some less experienced Teams may get let down by one or two and this affects all their team mates.
Its a great way to be at a festival but you have to keep in the back of your head that if you are getting a free ticket etc etc they do expect you to do your duties.
if you are only thinking about it now then you are going to have to get your skates on as jobs go very fast - good luck.
if you play fair with them - they will play fair with you.
a short list
Oxfam provide entrance gate stewards. Oxfam recruits its stewards primarily from past stewards and Oxfam supporters.

employ car parking staff between the Sunday before the Festival until the Monday after the Festival – staff are required to work a minimum of four 12 hour shifts

employ staff to assist with running the campervan and caravan fields. They also supply checkers at vehicle gates and staff the onsite vehicle chaperone service.

provide stewards to man the pedestrian and vehicle gates in 8 hour shifts - work is paid.

recruit stewards to work before, after and during the Festival.

sorry whats WBC thanks
Sorry the WBC stands for Workers Beer Company but that is organised in a completely different way to Oxfam for example.
A volunteer can apply direct to Oxfam but the WBC uses Group Organisers who do the recruiting but the WBC deadline for this year has already passed so no point listing it.
Although I am a volunteer I am also a Organiser and there is fifty on my team but as I run a very experienced Team I don't normally take on anyone new .
Unlike Oxfam for example people on my Team don't pay any deposit so it is possible to be a volunteer without it costing a penny.
There is a whole range of groups - from trade unions at one end and local community groups at the other - basically anyone with a good cause can form a group and over time can earn a fair bit .
Each Team works so many shifts but their Organisation gets the money direct into their bank account.
The newer the Team the more willing they will take on anyone new but as the WBC runs strict deadlines the time to try and join is the winter.
its good fun and the money goes to good causes but every volunteer has to be prepared to work and be prepared for shifts that may not suit them.
