So far, I can either find cheap unbranded 0.25m length or good quality branded 0.5m length patch cables. (I need cat6 )

Don't the better versions come in smaller lengths?

I've been reading posts by peeps who say their network speeds have improved by changing their leads to better quality ones so I figured I'd just start off buying the best I could but as I intend having a small 4u slimline wall cabinet with only a panel and a switch in it, I'm not going to have room for longer lengths of cable, 25cms would be fine to link switch and panel, I think.

So why not simply make your own? as you must have the necessary tools/plugs etc.

I work in the sound & entertainment industry and we use these all the time.

    Try:

    RS Components - www.rswww.com
    Farnell Components - www.farnell.com (I think!)

    Or more specialised people like:

    CLD Distribution - http://www.cld-dist.co.uk/

Also worth trying Ebuyer (pc parts etc) as they're quite reasonable.

To be honest - if it only 0.25m long, a 'wet piece of string' should work OK.

It is only when you get to longer cable lengths that the 'quality' would begin to effect performance.

The network speed should not be effected by 'cable quality' as such, as 100MB or 1GB is what the speed is. You may get a few more errors with a really poor cable, but if it rated at Cat 5 or Cat 6 it should work regardless. Out of interest, why do you need Cat 6 - what are you doing, what speed are you running and over what distance ?

In any case, you should not pay more that £1 for a cable of that length anyway.

This Cat 6 one is from eBuyer at 77p ... http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130638

This Cat 5e one is from eBuyer at 56p ... http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130604

Ease of use and speed more than anything else tbh. I've got so much to do (as well as normal housework and kids stuff) that ready made will save me time and effort. I need to relay as floor and plasterboard as well as sort out cable so if I can get ready made, I'd prefer it. Also less likely to cause any installation hold-ups.

Hard wiring a gig network round the house. Solid cat6 cable in walls (I know the argument for cat5e being adequate for a home network but my personal preference was to opt for cat6)

Thanks all, for the links.

Make your cables or try http://www.blackbox.co.uk/
  • It's not just what you use it how you use it.

If you are using 0.25m leads the bend radius for Cat6 will too great. As the cable bends the pairs in side will separate and this will cause issues in it's self (although, for the distance and speed of network will probably mean no issues).

This is what I found when I was looking for leads.

I was given great advice from Fusion Services and bought some good quality Cat6 cables
