clocking out

Options
i work for a logistics company that supplies logistics to a major brand leader.
we used to enter the site with a swipe card, and then after a 5/6 minute walk we would clock in.
this clock has been replaced by a clock at the turnstile as we enter the site.
my company has now stated that we must not leave our section, ie where the old clocking in machine was until our clocking out time, ie 14:30 therefore as the walk takes 5/6 minutes they do not expect to see anyone clocking out ie 14:35/6
can anyone tell me if this is legal?

Surely this wortks both ways - ie the walk to work (through the old turnstile) is now 'on the job' so the 5 mins you lose in the PM you gain in the AM as you can turn up to clock in 5 mins later? Or do they say that you have to be at your section by the allotted time in the AM?

Either way I'm not sure I would really care but I'm aware there are plenty who would.

You think you're the only person in the world who has a bit of a walk after entering the building?

What about people who work on the top floors in investment banks etc? Probably a good 10 minutes in an elevator with stopping and starting. Plus queuing to get in, get in and out and to the office door etc.

I doubt many employers pay for travel within a premises. Fair enough if you're a tunnel worker, and have to spend 30 minutes in a mine-cart or something, but a 4 minute walk through a building?

What is it with the jobsworth's moaning over a couple of minutes pay today?

It's swings and roundabouts really. My job is shift-based, but I'll do a night shift as an example:

Duty starts at 2200. We are expected to be there at 2150 for a handover from the previous shift, and ready to go at 2200. Some people, like myself, generally arrive at 2130, grab a coffee, have a quick chat, and relieve the previous shift about 2140. So my employer gets 20 minutes of 'free' time out of me. However, on most occasions, despite my shift not officially finishing until 0600, when the early turn come in, we go. And that could be 0510 to 0540, and generally it's nearer the former.

In the current climate, for the sake of 5 minutes, just be glad you have a job :) In my book anyway.

If you are working from 9am to 5pm, you should be at your desk ready to start work for 9am and you shouldn't leave until 5pm so it will probably take you an extra minute or so to put your things away and prepare yourself to leave so you shouldn't be clocking out until at least the time it takes to walk to your clock off position!!!!

It seems only reasonable that you actually work the hours you are paid for, which presumably you cannot do if you are not at your section. I don't know of any other job which allows staff to leave early so they have time to walk to the exit before 5pm.

    5 mins a day @ minimum wage = £120 a year roughly.

Sorry but agree with Jomo here, you should be at your desk ready to start at set time and don't leave until set time. You don't get paid to walk to the clocking out system or out the building.

So the OP is being petty over 5 mins, but the employer is not?
