Worcester 30Si Query

Good evening.

Last September we had a Worcester 30Si combi boiler fitted with a DT20 timer.

The timer for heating is set to 'twice' and the timer for the hot water is always set to 'off''. In total we have seven radiators with each radiator having its own TRV. We do not have a radiator without a TRV on it.

When the timer kicks in for the radiators, the burner LED lights up and the radiators spring into life, after a while the burner LED goes off and the radiators cool down. I would assume that this would be normal if the temperature is reached in each room, however, when the rooms start to cool down, the LED does not come on again, and the desired temperature in each room is not maintained. The only was that we can get the radiators to come on again, is by turning the hot water on.

Is this normal for us to have TRV's on all radiators? The heating engineer which replaces the boiler said that this would be the optimum system for us. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance.

  • Surely you will have a single thermostat which is wireless to the timer. Therefore you will have heating when a) the timer says it is the right time and b) the single thermostat is demanding heat. What temp is the thermostat set to?

TRV's are not linked in any way to the boiler output. They simply have an expanding bit inside them which cuts the flow to the rad when the TRV (and thus room) gets to a certain temp. It is normal to have TRV's on all rads except the one which is located next to or very near the thermostat - usually hallway
  • Hi jimbo_the_jetset, we do not have a wireless thermostat, or any thermostat, just the DT20 timer on the boiler and TRV's on all seven radiators.

I did question this at the time when the boiler was installed, but the engineer said that this is not required.
  • Evening. has anyone got ideas to our problem?

    Many thanks.

    Hi

A boiler should always have a room stat .
The radiator in the room or area containing the stat should not have a TRV fitted. If there is one, turn it up to max or take the head off.
You might have seen this .If not then watch the video and see if you have it set up properly.

I don't have a room thermostat. I am my own thermostat, the colder the weather the higher I set the boiler thermostat. I am sure we are not alone in not having a suitable room to locate one. The main living room has an often used log fire (we have free wood). The dining room and second reception room are only heated when in use. We have no hallway and the entrance lobby has no heating.

    Hi

As a home owner and end user you are entitled to do whatever you want.

I as an installer am obliged to fit systems with controls to a minimum of basic practice.
    I fit to best practice.
I am required to fit a room stat.
I post information that is factual and/or required by law or regulation (I hope) rather than rumour or guesswork

  • Thanks, I have looked at the video and our timer appears to be set correctly. I did however notice that the DT20 in the video had what appears to be a wireles icon on it, which our does not....and no room thermostat anywhere. I wonder if we will have to purchase a wireless thermostat, and if so, need to purchae the wireless DT20 timer to go with it or can you purchase a wireles thermostat that is compatible with the basic DT20 timer.

We just assumed that with the normal DT20 timer, the heating would just be on or off, with each rooms temperature controlled by the TRV's.

    Last September we had .....
If your installer hasn't explained to you how to work the system properly then he should come back and do so.

I as an installer am obliged to fit systems with controls to a minimum of basic practice.
and so should your installer have done.
