High Gas Bill for 6 weeks, is my usage normal?
Options
Hi,
We recently moved into a rather old detached cottage in the middle of nowhere. Upon moving we discovered that the energy was being supplied by EDF, and decided to switch to our old supplier, EON, who have been pretty good thus far.
Anyways, we setup the EDF account in our name and supplied the meter readings when we moved in. We then began the switch. Today we received a gas bill from EDF for 230 pounds for the 6 weeks we were with them. This seems high to us! Combined with the electricity, our winter bill is set to be around 600 pq.
Thats £220 for 205 units of gas for the period 2nd Jan - 17th Feb. Does that seem right? This is the first house we lived in with gas central heating but everyone we have told has said that there bills are much lower. We don't have the heating on all the time, but the house is very cold most of the time due to it being quite drafty and detached. EDF say our daily gas usage is 4.4 units on average, which is ok right? So why the large bill?
Thanks for your help guys. I just want some decent informed opinions as we weren't expecting to be hit with a bill this high and its rather depressing. :-(

Having said that the cost could be correct, during the cold spell we have been using about £25 a week.0 -
Drafty and detached just about sums up why you have high fuel bills.
You need to insulate big time and watch the bills drop.
Buy a Owl cm 119 home energy monitor to keep a sharp eye on usage. If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
Spring begins on 21st March.0 -
£150 per month in the middle of winter is hardly a large bill for a detached house.0

Thanks for the replies guys. I shall check the meter out although from what you've said it sounds about normal.
I don't think there is much we can do in the way of insulation here. The building itself is rather old. Dont think we can afford another cold winter here so summer may see us begin a search for somewhere a little more modern. Shame.0 -
