There are a few areas that would need investigated, one of which being the payments that we are receiving on your account. Like sweetstudent says, one possibility is that another persons payments are being credited onto your account creating this credit balance.

    Colin @ ScottishPower

I have rang and spoken to them and they said that they may need to check my records from 2001 (when I moved in) as I may have had a debt on the meter that wasnt mine?

He also mentioned something about my tariff 2 being strange since I didnt have central heating in my flat. Could you explain a little more about this if possible?

They did say they would get back to me but I have had lots of problems with contacting SP in the past, so checking my account would be no problem at all. Should I PM you?

    Just an update.
SP rang me yesterday to inform me that my meter IS set at the wrong tariff! Apparently, whoever installed it (mmm... SP did....) set it at Norweb's rates?! Then she also informed me that when they have been taking this year's readings, they had got my rate 1 and 2 numbers mixed up, resulting in a credit being created.

Here is what has been happening:
Rate 1 currently: 14.54 per KWh SHOULD BE: 11.752
Rate 2 currently: 4.95 per KWh SHOULD BE: 5.525
Standing charge currently: 2.38 SHOULD BE: 1.42

So... After working it out, they SAID that they owe me around £280 which they are going to send to me this week.

However, on asking about changing the rate of the meter, she said that they couldnt do that until a new meter had been installed?!! IS THIS RIGHT? They are coming on Thursday to put a KEY METER in. Now.. is this going to disadvantage me? (I am currently on a Smartcard meter through no fault of my own- it was there when I moved in 10 years ago. I am not in debt, or struggling to pay my bills, etc.) The current meter was only installed about 2 years ago.

Can anyone please offer me some advice? Thanks

Cardmeters are gradually being replaced by keymeters. I believe many companies have already arranged for all cardmeters to be changed across to keymeters. Scottish Power seem to be tone of the last companies to arrange the switch-over.
Keymeters allow the electric provider to adjust prices and charges set on the meter remotely, rather than having to come out (or their contracted firm) to come out to reset prices manually on the meter.

By the way, it is possible that the wrong prices were set on the meter. Most electricity providers use contracted firms to come out and do work to the meter (or to change the meter). Examples of such companies are MeterU and Accuread. The contracts are not normally exclusive (although British Gas do have an exclusive contract with MeterU in East Anglia), therefore the contracted firm may well set the wrong companiy's prices on the cardmeter by mistake.

Thanks for the advice re the key meters.\

Well SP arrived today and couldnt fit the new meter as I live in a council property and both the meter boxes have been separated by whoever fitted them in the first place. Basically they told me that United Utilities had messed up my meter, etc. and set it at the wrong tariff along with most of my neighbours who are with SP. GREAT.

So... I am basically stuck with overfeeding a meter set at the wrong rate. Grrrr! :(

Thats is surely not correct. Your supplier can change to the correct tariff via a tariff code. They send a message and you pick this up on your key. I am confused why they are not helping you.
