Ok,
I have been contacted today by an old bank. They have told me that my account is £290 in arrears and that i need to bring it under the overdraft limit.
This is an account that I closed over 4 years ago, but they have today told me that it along with my savings account with them is in fact live.
The address then have for me is an old address and without going into the branch then can tell me what transactions have been put onto my account.
I think that the they haven't closed either account, its somehow gone over drawn and since then they have been charging me for the privalige of having an overdraft each month.
I'm hoping that this will be sorted out quickly but does anyone know where i stand with regards to charges on an account which has clearly been dormant for over 4 years?

Did you receive a closing statement?
If the answer is no then it is your responsibility either to cancel all old standing orders or direct debits or incur fees for underfunding an account.
Did you not use a mail re direct service when moving?0 -
I think you are going to have to attend a branch with ID and current address to get statements of what has happened on the account. In fact it may be worth asking for a data protection act request under which they have to give you copies of all information they hold about you, and the max they can charge for it is £10.
This will at least show if they have a record of your request to close the account. If they failed to action this you may have cause for complaint, but most accounts have a clause that they cannot be closed whilst in the red, so if it was overdrawn (even by a small amount) they may have written to your old address advising the account was not closed and asking for a balance?
Again a full request should show any letters that went out.
Initially go in softly softly and explain as far as you were concerned the account was closed and see what info they can give you.
IF they have failed to action your request for no reason ie not overdrawn, they shoudl write off the balance.
I would be concerned that bank details and statements and you personal details may have been being sent to an old address, with all the ID fraud that goes on you need to ensure your details have not been abused.
