connecting laptop to home pc

Options
I hope some one can suggest the easiest and most simple way that I can achive the above. Running network wizard works on the laptop but it does not run on the desktop PC. All I want to do is use the PC for storage of some files from the laptop. Music mostly.

Cheers

You cant run the Networking wizard until after you've physically connected them with the right cable.

Do you have a network card in both the pc and the laptop?

    Toxteth,
Where would I be able to find out that information? The laptop would almost certainly have one but I think I will need to look at the paperwork supplied with the pc delivered in 2002.

Go to Start --> Control Panel --> System, click on the Hardware tab and select the Device Manager button. See if you have anything in the tree under 'Network adapters.'

Look at the back of the PC. It will have a 'hole' for the network cable, which looks like a telephone connection (old dial up modem connection), but will be bigger.

edit: Or follow TOG's advice above....:D

If both machines have this, then you need to buy a CAT5 crossover cable, connect both machines, and then run the network assistant.

Yes, you'll need to buy a PCI network card, e.g. http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/42061, to fit into a spare PCI slot in your motherboard, and Cat 5e crossover cable - probably cheapest on eBay - search for 'crossover cable'.

Can I connect two PC's via one ethernet cable and copy/backup files from them just via the network icon??

Both pc's need a network card....and you also need to get a crossover cable...see above.

There is a cheaper, easier and slower way to connect both pc's if they have a serial port.
