Quote for decorating h/s/l

Hope somebody could give ne some advice as to whether the quote I have been given for the following job seams reasonable. The job is to re-decorate the hall , stairway and landing as follows:-
The whole area is currently papered. Strip the walls of the current vinyl wallpaper, re-paper with anaglypta wallpaper and paint. Strip the existing paper off the hall and landing ceilings and re-paper with lining paper and paint. Prepare and paint 11 internal doors and architraves plus skirtings. They are currently darkish blue and are to be painted white.

Hall and landing are about 17' x 12' with 8' ceilings. Walls and woodwork appear to be in reasonable condition.

I have been quoted £2,000 for the work. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I reckon you have at least 15 man days and probably more. The doors and paintwork could take 5 days on their own given that you are going from a dark colour to white. Its not uncommon to have to apply 4 coats of white undercopat to lose the dark colour. Plus you may need acces equipment to get to the high ceilings to paper them. £2k seems fair to me.

Would you not rather have the ceilings skimmed and painted rather than papered? Have found from experience if there is ever a leak through a ceiling that is papered, it will all come off lol whereas if its plastered would prob just be a repaint job.

That's a fair point Tiff thanks. I suppose I could see what condition the ceiling's in once the paper is off and take it from there.

a single coat of BIN should sort that out prior to a single undercoat and gloss over top or 2 coats of BIN and just gloss straight onto it.

Nevertheless its prolly not far off the mark. You may be able to bet him down to iro £ 1,700 if you negotiate really hard.
