true cost per mile to run car anyone know please ?

hi.... i am trying to find out the true cost of running a car per mile....i have a p reg mondaeo....petrol.... i think it averages about 35 to the gallon... its a 17 hundred (17 and something ) ....how can i find out .?..the insurance is 143.00 per year... 3rd pft...i think i suposed to add on the wear of tyres ...etc.. but i dont know how to do it.....any suggestions...or is there a website that could work it out for me.......i want to know this ,as when i am traveling to supermarkets, and to buy stuff in the shops,,,, i can work out the true value of the items or shopping to include the traveling to actually buy the item.. i hope i make sense....

Have a look at this information from the AA. You can play with their figures a bit to get the true cost for your car.

My car costs about 40p/mile by the time you include depreciation, loss of interest on the money tied up and all the other more direct costs (doesn't include any allowance for insurance excess in event of an accident/removing small dents) but not sure how to factor these in or related charges like parking or fines. A lot of this is petrol, probably down to my driving style...

hi... with the link above.....and doing a bit of gigerring around... i would say its cost me roughly about 40 - 42p per mile.... which makes you think ..traving 10 miles round trip just because something is £1.00 or so cheaper is not saving at all....

thanks for that....... now i can gauge true savings which include the cost of the traveling to get it.............

Allocating depreciation and finance costs to a mileage is a not a sensible way of looking at as it means the more miles you do the cheaper it is.

A more sensible way of looking at it is the costs per mile are those that actually relate to mileage, such as petrol, servicing, tyres, and only the depreciation that results from mileage in excess of normal mileage.

Then on top of the costs per mile is a time based (e.g. annual) cost of owning the car which is depreciation, finance, insurance. This won't change whether you do 1 mile or 10,000 in the year.
