Medical Discharge

Options
I wonder if anyone can help with some info/advice as, per usual Army are not being straight.

My boyfriend has been in the Army for 6 years. While he was in Iraq in 2006 he was diagnosed with Diabetes, he was flown back and treated, he was of course P7 downgraded, he attended a medical board and was kept in, on a recruiting team. Now almost three years on they are looking at discharge again, we thought this was over and through his treatment it looked as though he was even getting a posting back to a unit anyway I suppose with all the cutback announcements etc he is an easy target. I have a couple of questions. They are giving him an Admin discharge on Medical grounds? thus he is not entitled to full medical resettlement? Does anyone know exactly what he will be entitled too? we are terrified as we know he won't ever earn as much on civvi street as he does now and he has alot of debt and even with my wages if he were to earn a standard wage we'd never be able to cover everything. Is there any way he'd get any help or lump sum? He was also told last year that he could claim for his 5 year money, he filled out forms and submitted them only to be told he wasn't entitled as it's five years from when you were 18 and not your join up date, so he was looking to re-apply for it in Feb and he has been told that he's not allowed to as it's only appliciapple if your in for another year after you claim, even though he wants to stay in and give his life to the army, and has given them six years he's not even entitled to claim for that!!!!

If anyone has any advice about help, funding or even if you know of any organisation we could contact to look into all of this, it's so hard trying to get anywhere with the army, anything would be appriciated.

Many Thanks Gem xxx

Hope you get some good answers here, but another site to try for info is the Army Rumour Service - https://www.arrse.co.uk - despite the "silly" name, it is a good resource for green types.

I don't know enough to say more than the general advice - don't sign anything until you know what it means, and ask for help - which you are doing!

Best of luck, from a light-blue type!
  • Hi, I would probably recommend contacting the Royal British Legion, the Armed Forces Benevolent Fund or his own regt/corps benevolent fund.

I had a soldier who needed advice that I couldn't give and these sources were all great.
  • Thanks for replying and thanks for the tip, just posted over there hopefully we'll get some response

If you're on ARRSE,PM 'HITBACK'.He's an ex C/S medically discharged & now fighting for the right's of those in the same boat.
  • That's great I'll do that, see if anyone can help, not had any replies there, starting to wonder if its because, same as us no one really knows the answer, with med discharges etc, it's all so complicated and being stuck the wrong side of the fence where I can't even get a look at the paperwork is very hard, my OH is typical squaddie, doesn't like to challenge authority even when he knows they are wrong, spose Its how they get away with so much!

    Really appreciate the replies xxxx

    Hi,

Def get in touch with british legion, im sure(RN) after 5yrs man time you are entitled to med pension.

he should be being sent to lots of sessions about med discharge via the education centre/redettlement office.

I do know of ppl stilll in with diabetes.

  • Hi he needs advice asap, the first port of call should be to the IERO who is normally based in a Army Ed Centre, i would also recommend the Legion and get him to read JSP 534 which is the resettlement manual, you are entitled to 30 days resettlement if you are medically discharged after 1 years service. The pension side is very complicated but advice is available from The Forces Pension Society.
    Hope this helps.
