Fitting new shower- cost?

Options
How much would I be expected to pay to have an electric shower fitted? There is a shower above the bath but would like to replace it. I would also have to replace the electical cableing to a higher grade for the shower 9 - 10 Kw and replace the fuse box to a newer trip switch distrubution unit.

Thanks

I am not an expert at all (can't wire a plug!) but I have had similar work done, 2 years ago. My partner did the phoning round, but here's what I remember.

The big companies wanted about £500 to just do the shower (I suppose by 'big companies' I mean the sort where you pay all the overheads like heating and lighting the head office).

A local self-employed electrician charged about £300 for fitting the shower, changing the fuse box to one with a trip switch, installing an extractor fan and a couple of other small jobs. He was hardworking, punctual, polite and cleaned up after himself.

I'm not sure about replacing electric cabling though.
  • a ball part figure at present time here in the south east is approx £350 to change consumer unit and supply full completion certificate, possible further works will be required if your earthing system is non complient to bs7671( the wiring regulations).
note to change a standard fuse board perhaps 8 ways takes about 2-3 hours then the testing if its a proper registered electrician well take approx 4hrs on a 3 bed semi etc, of course all open to variables as i am only sumising information at present, this has to be domne as part of the electricial completion certificate as when you change a fuseboard you have changed all the protective devices and as asuch all circuits are required to be tested for safety.
dont forget that a domestic bathroom is classed as a increased shock risk area and even more further works MAY need to be carried out, such as installing cross bonding ( or earthing ) to all exposed conductive parts ie radiator metal abth etc,
the light in the bathrrom might not be suitable because of water splashes etc,

best bet from my opioion is to go to the NICEIC website and look for local registered contractors in your area,
yes i am in the NICEIC as an approved contractor and a domestic installer, but there are other scheme providers, but in my opinion there the most reputable.

plus all notifiabe works to the building controll dept at your local councill now have to have a 6 year workmanship guarantee as per niceic rules, but of course this just gets added to the final bill.

on the cable front generally speaking a 10mm cable will be adequate to supply a 9.5 kw shower however your electrician should take all factors when he designes this.
most electricial quotes at present are only valid for 7 or 14days as the price of cable has more than doulble din recent times.

    thanks andy
    hope this helps
