Tesco Disney Kids t-shirt. Worn once, washed & now ripped - Tesco won't replace

Hi all,
Bit of an annoying one really!
We bought our daughter a Minnie Mouse Disney T-Shirt from the range sold exclusively in Tesco.
She wore it for a day, loves it to bits, and it got stuck in the wash.
When taken out the machine it had a large rip at the seam for the sleeve.
We took it back to the clothing dept & instantly the woman barked at me "that's a burn". No niceties at all, you'd think I'd just peed on her shoes.
She would not budge in any way shape or form as it was apparently "my word against theirs" regarding the damage.
Very nice woman.
So I asked if I could have details to complain to either tesco or even to the manufacturer themselves as - despite it being a £6 t-shirt - I was very angry that this would happen.
She went away for quite a while (perhaps hoping I'd leave?) and came back with someone from clothing - as soon as she started walking over it was clear this woman wasn't going to be nice in any way & sadly I was proved correct.
She was rude, insulting & refused to give me any details to complain about either them or the faulty item.
Now, as I repeatedly asked the two lovely ladies in store - tell me how a washing machine can burn a t-shirt in this way & I'll concede the point.
Prove to me it's a burn & I'll concede your point (to me it looks & feels like a rip & when turned outside in you can see some dye has also ran on it).
They couldn't do any of these things.
So, I ask you, humble reader - do I have any rights or recourse on this matter - not only with the faulty item, but also with the rather disgraceful staff treatment?
At present we are boycotting the whole store, not only the clothing dept - more due to the appalling staff attitude than anything else.
thanks in advance for any input.

It does sound like you experienced very poor customer service, perhaps a written complaint to the store manager would be in order.
However on the damage to the top, if it got stuck in the wash, then it is quite probable that it was ripped by the machine or when you pulled it out. My old washer had a nasty habit of occasionally shredding clothes, presumably they got stuck somewhere.
If you are convinced that the top was faulty, then I'd take it back to a different store, it's worth a try anyhow.0 -
I would write to head office complaining about it. Sounds like the women you dealt with have no clue how to be nice so I would go above their heads (via Head Office though, not that store as its likely any manager from that store will want to be seen to be backing up their staff):smileyhea0

If it got stuck in the wash as you admit, then it's not their fault it got damaged and I can't see why you took it back?
As for the staff being rude, well, if they were actually rude then complain. But if you think they were rude just because you didn't get your own way, which seems to be quite a popular way for some "consumers" to think at the moment, then don't bother!0 -

If you believe they were rude omplain ablout it, but by your description the damage to the t-shirt was nothing to do with the quality0 -

Sorry folks, sorry - I forget sometimes & type the way I speak.
When I say "stuck" in the wash, I mean it was put in a washing ie "I just stuck on a wash". Not that the item got jammed or anything.
It was simply placed in the washing mashine with the other clothes & when it came out it was damaged.
It wasn't snagged or anything.
Sorry for the confusion, my bad!0 -
Now that you've cleared up the 'stuck in the wash' definition, providing you washed the item as per the instructions then you should have some recourse if it didn't survive the wash.
What matters most to you? The unhelpful service or the non-replaced item? It may be worth pursuing both further, but make it clear what your point is and what you'd like to happen as a result of your complaint."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
Hi all,
Chalk up a minor victory for the "little guy".
After firing off a complaint email to head office, we were phoned by the complaints team who apologised profusely for the staff attitude & advised they had already contacted the store to reprimand them for the bad customer service.
As a goodwill gesture they are sending us a £10 voucher to cover the cost of the t-shirt (it was £6).
Thanks for all of the advice here, it really helped.0
