Hi,

I have a Ford Fiesta 1.25 2005 Model,

Recently had its Annual major service and have put 4 new tyres on it. Today while driving on the motorway I noticed a chugging sound and some clunking coming from the back of the car. It only seems to happen when going above 30mph, I have also noticed some clunking when slowing down and breaking. I have checked the wheel nuts on my back wheels and also checked that the exhaust is on properly. Im going to take it to a garage asap but would like some ideas to what it could be as I dont want to be told x and x and x is wrong pay £1000, I only just spend £740 on it 2 weeks ago.

Thankyou for any help.

Assuming there has been no significant loss of performance I would still suspect the exhaust. Is the exhaust old? Could it be breaking up inside? Is it a heavy clunking or more of a rattle? Have you checked the wheel nuts on the front wheels? Sounds can be misleading as to their source.

Put the clutch in and drop the revs when you hear the noise, does it change?

When you go to the garage get them to physically show you the problem, look as if you know about these things with lots of sage nodding, they wont want to take the gamble and a attempt some B/S.
Then repost here if you are still worried, but I think the conman garage stereo type is a little overplayed I'm sure the vast majority will treat you OK..

OTOH I think there needs to be a crapgarage.com website where people report rogue garages (business idea copyrighted by anewman on mse forums 2nd March 2010 - all rights reserved :D). Then people can avoid them.

There are sites like goodgaragescheme but IMO most of the reviews on those sites are done by the garage themselves, and you have to wonder if they screen out the bad reviews. To me, my mind would be made up if I saw 3 obviously independent reports of poor service from a garage, rather than 200 reviews just plainly saying the garage is good.

And if the garages think it's defamation then that would be their problem for giving crap service.

Yeah that's the problem with on line recommendations I haven't seen one site that works well, the best would be to search owners clubs forums for your brand of car, I use the Porsche forums and the one or two bad garages are very well known within the clubs.

Still I hope I am right though, I'm sure the majority are OK, same with plumbers etc..

If the car is 'chugging', it sounds like you've got one of those street charity collectors stuck up the exhaust.
